Poliovirus detected in Karachi, Peshawar sewage samples

WEB DESK: The detection of the poliovirus in sewage samples from Karachi and Peshawar has raised concerns, as reported by ARY News on Thursday. According to sources, samples collected on June 3rd and 4th from Karachi’s Kemari and Peshawar have tested positive for wild poliovirus type 1, along with vaccine-derived poliovirus types 2 and 3.

In 2024, a total of 185 samples from all provinces have tested positive for polio, with 45 districts across Pakistan reporting cases. So far this year, five polio cases have been reported in the country, tragically including a child who succumbed to the disease.
