Intelligence agencies to help govt recover unpaid electricity bills: Report

In a recent development, the PML-N government has decided to create special units to assist power distribution companies (DISCOs) in recovering unpaid electricity bills.

These Support Units will include officers from intelligence agencies like ISI and MI. They will work under the leadership of the DISCO’s CEO, with a civil armed forces sector commander as co-director, directly reporting to the Power Division secretary.

The proposal for these units has been submitted to the Cabinet Committee for Energy, expected to be approved soon. Initially, the Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) will host the first unit, with plans for expansion to other cities if successful.

This decision aims to address the DISCOs’ challenge of recovering Rs1,780 billion in outstanding dues, crucial for stabilizing the economy amidst monthly losses of over Rs49 billion due to electricity theft.
