Has govt abolished PTA tax on mobile phones?

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has clarified social media reports regarding abolishing tax on mobile phones for overseas Pakistanis.

Recently, there have been rumours on social media that the Prime Minister has ordered to abolish the tax on mobile phones. Furthermore, it was also being said that overseas Pakistanis would no longer pay the tax on their phones.

However, the telecommunication authority has denied these reports. Talking to Urdu News, a PTA spokesperson clarified that last year, the Prime Minister had launched the facility for overseas Pakistanis to register their phones for 120 days through the temporary registration system.

The PTA official added that apart from this facility, government has not issued any orders to abolish the FBR tax. “Any phone from abroad gets blocked after more than 120 days on Pakistani networks and has to be registered using PTA’s website or mobile app,” he added.

According to the spokesperson, the mobile phone can’t be registered without paying the tax. He stated that the reports that the tax on bringing an unregistered mobile phone has been abolished are not true.
