BCB Snags Cricket Legend Mushtaq Ahmed as New Spin Bowling Coach

WEB DESK: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the appointment of former Pakistani leg-spinner and World Cup winner Mushtaq Ahmed as the new spin bowling coach.

According to media reports, Mushtaq will join the team ahead of the preparation camp later this month for the T20 series against Zimbabwe and will continue working with the Tigers until the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA.

With a wealth of coaching experience, the 53-year-old has previously served as the spin bowling coach for England (2008-2014), West Indies (2018-19), and Pakistan (2020-22). He also held the position of Pakistan team’s bowling consultant from 2014 to 2016.

Having claimed 185 wickets in 52 Tests at an average of 32.97 and 161 wickets in 144 ODIs for Pakistan, Mushtaq brings invaluable expertise to the role. Notably, he played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s World Cup triumph in 1992, including the memorable dismissal of Graeme Hick with one of his trademark googlies in the final.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Mushtaq Ahmed stated in a released statement by BCB, “It is a great honour for me to be a part of the Bangladesh cricket team as a spin bowling coach. I am looking forward to the role and want to pass my experience to the players because they are very coachable and I always believe that they are one of the most dangerous teams around.”

He added, “They can beat anyone because they have the capability, the resources, and the talent. I will try to instill that belief into them. I am very excited at the opportunity to work with the team.”
