KARACHI: In a recent development, the Sindh Cabinet has greenlit the introduction of gold, silver, and platinum number plates for vehicles, marking a significant shift in vehicle registration standards.
The proposal, presented by Minister for Excise and Taxation Sharjeel Memon, outlines the introduction of premium number plates, which offer a range of unique features aimed at enhancing vehicle ownership and registration processes.
Presently, the Excise and Taxation Department provides three categories of number plates, catering to commercial, non-commercial, and motorcycle vehicles.

The newly approved premium number plates boast several distinctive features, including personalised ownership that can be inherited, transferability to alternative vehicles, CNIC-based registration applicable to any private vehicle, and reusability across different vehicles. Furthermore, platinum number plates offer customisable color shades (excluding prescribed colors) and the option for transferability to another CNIC for a specified fee.
These premium plates are categorised into Platinum, Gold, and Silver, each offering varying character limits and price points. Platinum plates, accommodating a maximum of three characters, are priced at a base rate of Rs2 million. Gold plates, allowing up to five characters, come at a cost of Rs1 million, while Silver plates, with a maximum of seven characters, are priced at a base rate of Rs50,000.
