Imran Khan to faces new legal challenges despite cipher case relief: Rana Sanaullah

WEB DESK: Two days after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan received relief in the cipher case, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, announced that new cases will be filed against the former prime minister in the coming days.

Speaking on Geo News’ “Capital Talk,” Sanaullah, the former security chief, was questioned about the potential relief and release Khan might receive in other cases following the Islamabad High Court’s verdict in the cipher case. Sanaullah asserted that Khan’s release was not solely contingent on the verdict in the iddat case. He acknowledged that under Pakistani law, an accused can benefit from the doubt.

“Doubts can be created in a simple matter…at one time, we saw back-to-back sentences without the creation of doubts. It is likely to see doubts in the iddat case as well, just like we saw in the cipher case,” he commented.

Sanaullah argued that the iddat case, often seen as a personal matter, should not be considered so for a public figure. He said that Khan was involved in cases where confessions had been made.

When asked about new cases, Sanaullah confirmed that they would be filed soon. He hinted at a possible case related to a controversial post by Imran Khan on social media platform X, which the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) anti-cybercrime team is investigating. The post suggested that Pakistanis should study the Hamood ur Rahman Commission Report to understand who the true traitor was, General Yahya Khan or Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Sanaullah reiterated that Khan had driven the country to a critical juncture, presenting two options: a democratic path leading to dialogue or a confrontational path. He asserted that there was no opportunity for PTI to choose confrontation, stressing that democratic parties had always been open to dialogue, but PTI had not responded.
