How much is spent on each national assembly session in Pakistan?

Elected representatives, chosen by the people’s votes, go to the assemblies with a mission to serve the country and its citizens. Here, they make laws to address public issues.

However, running these sessions comes with a high cost, including travel allowances, protocol, and other necessities for the members of the national and provincial assemblies.

A report by PILDAT, released on October 5, 2023, highlighted the expenses involved. The average daily cost of a National Assembly session was found to be 66.5 million rupees, with each hour costing about 24.2 million rupees.

Given this data, the expenses for a recent seven-day session would be around 465 million rupees. Over the past five years, the National Assembly has spent 20.5 million rupees per member. This expenditure is intended for members to work for the public’s welfare, not to engage in party politics.

The report also pointed out that in the last five years, the National Assembly faced quorum issues 105 times, leading to the postponement of 72 sessions due to an incomplete quorum. This indicates a major waste of resources and highlights the need for better attendance and participation from the elected members.
