Girl diagnosed with ‘love brain’ after making over 100 calls daily to boyfriend

A Chinese woman, known only as Xiaoyu, has been admitted to the hospital due to her obsessive behaviour towards her boyfriend. Doctors suspect she may be suffering from borderline personality disorder, according to The South China Morning Post.

Xiaoyu’s fixation on her boyfriend started during her first year of university, local reports say. She became excessively reliant on him, constantly demanding updates on his whereabouts and needing constant communication. This behaviour strained their relationship, leaving her boyfriend feeling overwhelmed.

The situation reached a breaking point when Xiaoyu made over 100 calls to her boyfriend in a single day, receiving no response. This caused her extreme distress, leading to her damaging household items. Concerned for her safety, her boyfriend contacted the authorities.

Officers arrived just as Xiaoyu was on the verge of jumping from their balcony. She was promptly taken to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with borderline personality disorder, as reported by The South China Morning Post.

Although not a medical term itself, “love brain” is often informally used to describe this kind of obsessive behavior in romantic relationships. Dr. Du Na, a physician at the hospital where Xiaoyu received treatment, elaborated that borderline personality disorder can sometimes coincide with other conditions such as anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. Dr. Du also suggested that such conditions might be linked to unhealthy childhood attachments.
