Elon Musk withdraws lawsuit against OpenAI

WEB DESK: Elon Musk has withdrawn his lawsuit against OpenAI and two of the company’s co-founders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, in California state court, according to reports on Tuesday. This decision by Musk comes just a day after he publicly criticized OpenAI and its new partnership with Apple.

The lawsuit, which was filed in February, accused OpenAI, Altman, and Brockman of breach of contract and fiduciary duty. However, Musk’s move to dismiss the suit came before a scheduled hearing in San Francisco, where the judge was to consider the defendants’ request for dismissal.

Legal experts had previously questioned the foundation of Musk’s case, noting that the contract central to the lawsuit was not a formal written agreement signed by all parties. Musk had alleged that OpenAI, originally founded to develop artificial general intelligence for the benefit of humanity, had shifted its focus towards profitability, largely controlled by Microsoft.

In response to Musk’s actions, analysts noted that the lawsuit had served as a reminder of Musk’s involvement in the creation of OpenAI, a company that has gained significant attention and success, particularly with the viral spread of ChatGPT.

Last year, Musk launched his own AI startup, xAI, positioning it as a competitor to OpenAI. X.AI, which aims to “understand the true nature of the universe,” recently announced a substantial funding round. The startup’s debut chatbot, Grok, draws inspiration from “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and claims to have real-time knowledge of the internet.

Representatives for Musk and Altman have yet to respond to requests for comment.
