Balochistan to Oxford: Israr Khan elected president of Oxford Union

In a remarkable milestone, Israr Khan Kakar, a bright student hailing from Balochistan, has been elected as the President of the Oxford Union.

It is pertinent to mention that Kakar has become the first student from Balochistan and overall the third one from Pakistan to be elected as the President of the Oxford Union.

Before him, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and a survivor of the APS school Peshawar tragedy also held this position. Kakar took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to celebrate his accomplishment.

“Coming from a remote village on Pak- Afghan border in Balochistan, this is beyond what I ever imagined,” he wrote on the social media platform. He added that he is “incredibly grateful to the members of the Oxford Union for their trust in electing” him as a President, and to his team for believing in him.

Former Oxford Union President Ahmad Nawaz also congratulated Kakar. He hoped that “many more Pakistanis will follow on.”

CM Balochistan Sarfraz Bugti also congratulated Khan over his victory. “Following in the footsteps of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, Israr Khan has won the Oxford Union Presidency,” he wrote.

Israr Khan Kakar’s academic journey is truly remarkable. After achieving distinction in LLB honours from the University of Aberdeen, he pursued Bar at Law at Lincoln’s Inn on a fully-funded scholarship.

Currently enrolled in the DPhil programme at the Law Department of the University of Oxford, Israr’s academic achievements are a testament to his dedication and hard work.
