Yusuf Raza Gilani nominated as PPP candidate for Senate Chairman

ISLAMABAD: Yusuf Raza Gilani, a Senator from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has been nominated as the party’s candidate for the position of Chairman Senate, as announced by the party’s Secretariat on Thursday.

Currently, Gilani has garnered support from 24 senators belonging to the PPP, 19 from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and four from the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), among others, totaling 54 senators.

In addition to this support base, Gilani potentially has backing from three senators of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement–Pakistan (MQM-P) and five from the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F).

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) holds the support of 20 senators.

Gilani, who previously served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2012 until his disqualification by the Supreme Court, has a history of significant political contributions. Notably, upon assuming office, he initiated an impeachment motion against then-President Pervez Musharraf.

During his tenure, Gilani played a key role in establishing the University of Swat in July 2010 and resolving the judicial crisis in March 2009. He also advanced nuclear energy projects across Pakistan. Moreover, Gilani served as the opposition leader in the Senate from 2021 to 2022.
