Software Engineer Arrested for Changing IMEIs of Stolen Phones

Karachi police have arrested a software engineer for allegedly changing the IMEIs and cracking the passcodes of stolen mobile phones in the city.

According to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) district west, the arrested individual was working at a mobile market in Metroville Frontier Colony. The police official further revealed that software engineer, identified as Marsal Khan, used to change the IMEIs of valuable stolen mobile phones with those of cheaper and defective ones.

During the investigation, the accused admitted to obtaining mobile phones from robbers and altering their IMEIs to avoid detection by the police. According to the police, a laptop, device – used to change IMEIs – dongle device, hard disk and 13 stolen mobile phones were recovered from the possession of the arrested individual.

On the other hand, according to the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) report, 162 cases of robbery and 4,184 cases of motorbike theft were reported in April. The report further revealed that 59 individuals lost their lives during last month in Karachi.
