PTI to protest across country against ‘sham by-elections’

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has labeled Sunday’s by-elections across the country as ‘sham’ and has announced plans for nationwide protest demonstrations on Friday.

During a joint press conference in Islamabad alongside party chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, PTI’s senior leader and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub, characteriSed the by-elections as not genuine electoral processes but rather a charade.

Barrister Gohar insisted that the Election Commission of Pakistan must explain why returning officers (ROs) from the judiciary were not appointed for the by-elections. “Despite our notification to the election commission 24 hours ago, no action has been taken; the Punjab government continues to profit from this egregious act,” he stated.

“Our polling agents were ejected from the polling stations,” he added.

Highlighting the significance of voting in democracy, Barrister Gohar stressed that the proper use of votes yields authentic results. “Everyone witnessed the events of the by-elections,” he remarked.

He cited an instance from a polling station where, despite the presiding officer reporting 750 registered votes, over 900 votes were cast.
