The Sindh Education Department has announced its decision to terminate the employment of absentee or “ghost” teachers, following revelations that several educators have been neglecting their duties for extended periods.

Among them, 20 teachers from the Sharqi district were found to have been absent from work, with some reportedly living abroad for years without notifying the authorities, all while continuing to draw salaries.

The department had previously sought explanations from the absent teachers, but none responded, prompting the decision to dismiss them from service.

Sindh is grappling with a severe teacher shortage, with hundreds of schools impacted. Compounding the issue, recent reports have surfaced about a scarcity of textbooks in many schools, further straining the education system in the province.
