The Lahore High Court has issued strict orders to combat rising smog levels, directing that all vehicles causing excessive pollution be seized.
Justice Shahid Karim released a written order addressing various petitions seeking effective measures to reduce smog.
The court’s order noted that the government’s current efforts were insufficient to control the smog, and called on the Advocate General of Punjab to organize a meeting with all relevant stakeholders and officials in Lahore.
The High Court highlighted that trucks and heavy vehicles entering Lahore were a major contributor to the city’s smog. It ordered that all polluting vehicles be seized and directed the Transport Department to inspect the fitness of buses and trucks, ensuring that unfit vehicles are kept off the roads.
Additionally, the court instructed the Lahore Commissioner to hold a meeting about restricting commercial activities in Lahore and surrounding areas after 8 p.m. It suggested a two-week ban on commercial activities on Sundays and banned smoke-emitting vehicles from entering the motorway. The court also proposed limiting wedding events and reducing guest numbers as possible solutions to lower pollution levels.
