Govt begins Pindi-Murree glass train project

The Punjab government has initiated the development of a glass train project, appointing a working group comprising 18 departments to oversee the ambitious venture.

According to media reports, the train, designed to run between Rawalpindi and Bhurban in Murree, marks a key phase in the Murree Development Plan, with work already underway on the Project Concept One (PC-1) stage.

The group, led by Punjab’s Transport Minister, includes the Rawalpindi Commissioner, deputy commissioners of Rawalpindi and Murree, and various other department heads. Their primary task is to coordinate efforts for the 65-kilometre train route, which will commence from Saddar in Rawalpindi and traverse scenic locations such as Margalla Hills and Barakahu, concluding in Bhurban.

The National Engineering and Scientific Commission (NESCOM) has been entrusted with conducting a feasibility study to assess the project’s viability. According to officials, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz formally approved the project on June 29, 2024, during a high-level meeting addressing the Murree Development Plan.

Following the project’s approval, the Punjab Transport Department was instructed to expedite the preparation of a feasibility report and cost estimates. As a result, a multi-departmental working group was formed under the leadership of the Transport Minister to streamline the process.

Officials have confirmed that NESCOM has begun the feasibility study, which includes the use of drone footage for planning purposes. The final costs and timeline will be determined after PC-1 is completed. While the train will initially connect Rawalpindi to Murree Bhurban, additional stations along the route through Margalla and Barakahu may be added as plans are finalized.

The working group is also addressing key challenges, such as land acquisition for train tracks and stations, and will submit a report outlining total costs and strategies to ensure the project is completed efficiently with minimal expenditure.
