CM Maryam bans social media for on-duty police officers

Punjab’s Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz has enacted a sweeping ban on the use of social media by on-duty police officers, extending to platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram.

According to media reports, the decisive measure comes in response to several viral videos involving Punjab police personnel, including female officers, that garnered widespread attention online.

In the wake of the CM Maryam’s directive, the Punjab Police Inspector General (IG) has introduced a comprehensive social media policy aimed at regulating officers’ online activity. Under the new rules, officers and staff found posting videos while in uniform will face strict disciplinary actions.

Furthermore, the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Operations has further clarified the guidelines, stating that all social media usage must now be approved by the District Police Officer (DPO) or relevant unit heads.

The policy prohibits police personnel from sharing personal, political, or religious views on social media, with all official communications to be handled through designated channels overseen by the DPO or unit head.

Additionally, the policy bars private citizens from using police vehicles or facilities for creating social media content. Regional Police Officers (RPOs) and unit heads have been made personally responsible for enforcing these rules, with accountability measures in place to ensure compliance within their respective jurisdictions.
