The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists is being observed on Saturday around the world, including in Pakistan.
Today is a day dedicated to remembering journalists who have faced violence and even death in their pursuit of the truth.
Journalists raise their voices against every injustice in society, exposing wrongdoings. They act as the eyes and ears of society, often risking their lives and working in challenging conditions.
The United Nations (UN) passed a resolution establishing November 2 as the day to honour journalists who have lost their lives or suffered for their commitment to delivering the truth to the public.
Although Pakistan has implemented several laws to protect journalists, it is still ranked as one of the most dangerous places for them. Between 2000 and 2022, 150 journalists were murdered in Pakistan, with only two culprits being brought to justice.
According to reports from The Freedom Network, a non-governmental organization for journalists’ safety, 2024 has been declared the deadliest year for journalists in Pakistan, with six journalists killed and 11 others facing assassination attempts.
Meanwhile, the latest statistics from the International Federation of Journalists indicate that at least 146 journalists have lost their lives since the beginning of the conflict in October 2023.
This somber and alarming situation highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of laws aimed at protecting journalists, ensuring that those who commit crimes against them face the full force of justice.
