England defender Kieran Trippier announced his retirement from international football on Thursday at the age of 33, having earned 54 caps for his country.
Trippier, who plays for Newcastle United, made a significant impact during his international career, including starting six matches at the European Championship in Germany. However, he was omitted from the final against Spain, with Luke Shaw selected instead.
In an Instagram post, Trippier reflected on his career, stating, “I never thought as a young lad from Bury that I would play for my country, let alone achieve 54 caps. It’s been one of the biggest honours of my life to represent my country at four major tournaments.”
He extended his gratitude to former manager Gareth Southgate and the support staff for their trust throughout his career. Trippier also expressed appreciation for his teammates, highlighting memorable moments such as reaching two Euro finals and a World Cup semi-final. He expressed confidence that the current squad will secure a major tournament victory in the future.
Trippier concluded his message by wishing interim manager Lee Carsley, the coaching staff, and the team all the best for the future. He also thanked England fans for their unwavering support, acknowledging their role in motivating the team during challenging times.
