Cristiano Ronaldo opens up about retirement plans

Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has shed light on his retirement plans for both club and country. Speaking at a press conference before Portugal’s Nations League match against Croatia in Lisbon on Thursday, the 39-year-old clarified that he has no immediate plans to retire from international football.

“When the time comes, I’ll make the decision to step down,” Ronaldo said, expressing his belief that he still has much to offer the Portuguese team. “If I ever feel that I am no longer contributing, I’ll be the first to step away,” he added, referencing his former teammate Pepe, who retired from professional football last August at the age of 41, leaving the sport on his own terms.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who has been playing for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia for nearly two years, did not score during his record sixth appearance at the European Championship this year, where Portugal was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Despite facing criticism, Ronaldo stated that he “never considered leaving the national team” and continues to have the support of coach Roberto Martinez. “The expectations placed on the national team were perhaps too high,” Ronaldo said. He also noted that challenging periods in a footballer’s career can offer opportunities for growth.

Following Thursday’s match against Croatia, Portugal will remain in Lisbon to prepare for their upcoming fixture against Scotland on Sunday.
