PM Shehbaz Sharif orders enhanced monkeypox screening nationwide

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed a comprehensive revamp of monkeypox screening across Pakistan’s entry points, including airports, seaports, and land borders.

PM Sharif highlighted the urgency of reinforcing screening measures and ensuring the availability of essential equipment. The National Command and Operations Center (NCOC) will oversee ongoing monitoring, while a nationwide awareness campaign is set to educate the public on prevention.

In response to the virus being declared a public health emergency by the WHO, the Punjab Health Department has issued additional directives, establishing isolation wards and designating six hospitals for potential cases.

Moreover, Karachi airport has also implemented similar measures, with enhanced medical checks for incoming passengers.

PM Sharif’s orders come as authorities report that a resident of Mardan, recently returned from abroad, tested positive for monkeypox and is now in quarantine. The situation remains under control, with health officials stressing the importance of caution and timely preventive action.
