Wearing mask is now mandatory in Lahore

Facing a sharp rise in air pollution, Punjab has introduced strict actions to address Lahore’s smog problem. With the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) soaring as high as 520, authorities have mandated mask-wearing in public places to protect residents from the hazardous conditions.

The Punjab Chief Minister has tasked all departments with enforcing environmental regulations tightly. The recent crackdown has led to the immobilisation of over 2,500 vehicles emitting high levels of pollutants, the closure of 469 factories, and the dismantling of brick kilns known to contribute to the smog.

Officials have also lodged 318 cases against individuals for burning straw and crop residues, which has led to multiple arrests.

Maryam Aurangzeb called on citizens to actively support efforts to reduce pollution levels. She noted that some of the smog is intensified by pollutants carried from India by eastward winds. She also announced plans for a traffic strategy designed to limit vehicle emissions across Lahore.

Environment Protection Department Secretary Raja Jahangir Anwar stated that wind patterns from the east are exacerbating Lahore’s pollution. He praised the community’s ongoing efforts, highlighting recent improvements in air quality as citizens have been reducing waste burning and limiting emissions.
