LAHORE: As a thick blanket of smog continued to suffocate several cities in Pakistan’s Punjab, the National Highways and Motorways Police shut various sections of motorways in the province.

According to the National Highway Police spokesperson, Motorway M4 — Pindi Bhatian to Abdul Hakeem — was shut down due to heavy fog and smog.

The spokesperson added that the Motorways are closed to ensure public safety and safe travel. “Commuters should prefer traveling from 10 am to 6 pm during the foggy season,” it said.

During the commute on Motorways and national highways, travelers should use front and rear fog lights and avoid unnecessary travel. Authority spokesperson advised to avoid speeding and keep a proper distance from the oncoming vehicle.

Following the surge in smog, the Punjab government has banned all outdoor activities including outdoor sports events, exhibitions and festivals, and outdoor dining of restaurants in Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala districts.

Besides the suspension of all outdoor activities, markets and shopping malls have been directed to close by 8 pm.
