WEB DESK: The provincial government of Punjab has faced criticism for its failure to supply new textbooks to students as the new academic session commences, leading to the continued use of old textbooks.

According to media reports, students have been given old and damaged textbooks instead of receiving the new ones.

The delay in printing new textbooks has resulted in students not receiving them on time, compelling them to continue using outdated materials. In Punjab, where over 15 million children are enrolled in schools, the demand for textbooks exceeds 50 million.

The reports said that the printing of new books may be completed during the upcoming summer vacations. Teachers have expressed concerns about the difficulties children face when studying from old books.

They have noted that studying from old, often torn books poses significant challenges for children, leading to a lack of interest in their studies.

Meanwhile, General Secretary Rana Liaqat Ali stressed that it is the responsibility of the Programme Monitoring and Implementation Unit (PMIU) to ensure the provision of basic facilities in schools.

He further highlighted that despite changes in government, the officers within PMIU remain the same, underlining the need for accountability in ensuring timely access to educational materials.
