Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has called off its planned protest after deadly clashes with law enforcement agencies in Islamabad.
The party’s Information Secretary, Sheikh Waqas Akram, said the decision was made due to government brutality and concerns over plans to turn the capital into a “killing field for unarmed citizens.”
PTI workers killed in during protest
Akram confirmed that eight PTI workers were killed when police opened fire on peaceful protesters. The victims were identified as Anis Shehzad Satti, Malik Mobeen Aurangzeb, Abdul Qadir, Malik Safdar Ali, Ahmad Wali, Mohammad Ilyas, and Abdul Rashid.
Furthermore, the PTI spokesperson condemned the police for using violence against unarmed protesters in the streets of Islamabad. Akram also called on the Chief Justice of Pakistan to investigate the killings and take action against those responsible.
Despite the violent crackdown, Akram said PTI workers had continued their march toward D-Chowk, enduring hardship and violence. However, he stressed the party could not allow more deaths. He added that PTI would continue to fight for “real freedom” as long as their struggle for justice remained.
