The Ministry of Information Technology is considering a proposal from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for a VPN policy.
The PTA has recommended that VPNs be registered rather than banned, citing their widespread use by IT firms and freelancers.
Moreover, they stress that VPNs are crucial for personal data protection and online security and will be regulated rather than prohibited.

Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima stated there has been no nationwide internet suspension or speed reduction, attributing any speed issues to the increased use of VPNs.
PTA Chairman, retired Maj Gen Hafeez Ur Rehman, informed the media that internet lag was due to a damaged submarine cable and clarified that no firewall would be installed.
Furthermore, he also highlighted that the government’s online management system is being updated, not replaced with a firewall.
