Fish die-off hits Rawal Dam

As the water levels in the reservoir continue to fall sharply, the latest fish die-off at Rawal Dam has sparked concerns.

Dead fish have been seen in large numbers along the dam’s banks lately. Locals believe that conditions including low water levels, droughts, and heatwaves might have contributed to the death, even if the official cause of death has not yet been established.

Moreover, a similar occurrence happened earlier in 2017 when it was said that the poisoned water in the dam caused thousands of fish to perish. The police had filed an FIR on this account after hearing rumors that someone had purposefully poured poison into the water to settle scores.

According to Dawn news , an official from Islamabad Capital Territory said that while the dam is administratively under the control of the Small Dams Organization Punjab, he collected information on the fish’s death.

He said that the reservoir’s water levels were incredibly low and that just a few dead fish were discovered near the dam’s banks.

“It appears that fish are dying from a lack of oxygen and water,” he added, adding that further rain is predicted starting next week, which should raise the water level.
