LAHORE: In a recent development, religious scholars of Darul Iftah Jamia Naeemia in collaboration with Punjab police had a meeting and issued a fatwa, declaring sky firing, kite flying, and one wheeling haram [un-Islamic].
The fatwa mentioned Quranic verses and Hadiths in which the protection of human life was prioritised.
While quoting the fatwa the officials also discussed that investing in these things is also prohibited by Islam and mentioned Quranic verses, “Surely the wasteful are ˹like˺ brothers to the devils. And the Devil is ever ungrateful to his Lord.” (Surah Al-Isra-27)
According to Punjab police, cases have been registered against 152 individuals for kite flying, 150 for one wheeling, and 119 suspects involved in sky-firing.
DIG operations Faisal Kamran confirmed the fatwa issue while stating, “All three activities are prohibited due to their extravagance, fatal consequences, and un-Islamic nature.”
He further added, “Kite strings and aerial firing have already claimed numerous innocent lives. The loss of even one life is unacceptable.”
DIG Lahore highlighted the catastrophic impacts of these actions but individuals, mostly youngsters are involved in such kind of illegal activities.
While stating these issues he requested parents, teachers, and all religious scholars to actively educate children and aware society of the dangerous impact of these activities and prevent them from indulging in such unlawful behavior.
“We must work together as a community to safeguard our youth and ensure their compliance with Islamic and legal principles,” the DIG said.
As stated by the Punjab Prohibition of Kite Flying (Amendment) Act, 2024, individuals caught in kite flying will have to face 3 to 5 years imprisonment or a fine of Rs2 million, or both, and failure to pay the fine could result in an additional year of imprisonment.
