OKARA: Following the conviction of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in the £190 million Al-Qadir University case, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz announced that scholarships will be provided to the students of the said university.

Addressing the Honhaar Scholarship ceremony at the University of Okara today, the chief minister said that the Al-Qadir Trust University is now under my control and scholarships would be distributed to its students. She announced the inclusion of Al-Qadir University in the government’s student welfare initiatives.

While talking to the students, the CM said “The first shipment of the laptops has arrived in Pakistan and will be distributed amongst all talented deserving students throughout the province soon.”

“Honhaar Scholarships will be provided to 50,000 students next year along with 100,000 e-bikes to students in a year,” the chief minister said.

Her remarks regarding the Al-Qadir University came after an accountability court sentenced Minister Imran Khan to 14 years and his wife Bushra Bibi to 7 years in prison in the £190m graft case.

The former prime minister was also fined one million rupees while his Bushra Bibi was fined 0.5 million in a case known as the £190 million corruption case or Al-Qadir Trust case.

The judge also ordered the federal government to take the custody of Al-Qadir Trust University.

Talking about the verdict, she said “Theft has been proven in the Al-Qadir Trust case as its verdict came in today. “Imran Khan is the first [former] prime minister who has been caught red-handed while committing corruption.”

The chief minister said that she saw a video of some students who had invited her to visit them. “Students will get religious and conventional education at the varsity and I will also award scholarships and laptops to them,” she added.
