WEB DESK: Breakfast, often dubbed the most important meal of the day, sets the tone for energy levels and productivity. Among the plethora of breakfast options, parathas emerge as a popular choice. Paired with chai or coffee, or accompanied by curd, these hot and buttery delights are a comfort food staple, particularly favored during the colder months. However, the question lingers: are parathas a healthy breakfast choice?

According to Indian dietician Vaishali Verma, parathas offer a balanced combination of carbohydrates, fiber, and protein, especially when stuffed with dal or paneer. For individuals with a normal Body Mass Index (BMI) and activity level, incorporating parathas into their diet is preferable over processed breakfast alternatives.

But can one indulge in parathas daily? Verma advises against a monotonous diet and suggests incorporating variety, such as sattu paratha, sprouts stuffed paratha, or vegetable-laden options. Diversity in food choices ensures better nutritional intake, complementing parathas with cereals, pulses, and vegetables.

To enhance the nutritional profile of parathas, Dr Neeti Sharma, a Senior Consultant in Nutrition & Dietetics at Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram, proposes several adjustments:

  1. Opt for whole wheat or multigrain flour for increased fiber content and sustained energy release.
  2. Experiment with a range of vegetables for stuffing to boost flavor and nutrition.
  3. Limit oil usage to 1-2 teaspoons per 2 parathas for a healthier preparation.
  4. Incorporate a variety of spices not only for flavor but also for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  5. Pair parathas with curd or yogurt for improved gut health.
  6. Explore wholesome chutneys with fresh vegetables, lentils, or herbs to elevate taste and nutritional value.

In essence, while parathas offer a nutritious breakfast option, modifications can further enhance their health benefits. It’s essential to strike a balance in calorie consumption, practicing portion control to avoid excessive calorie intake. By incorporating variety and making mindful adjustments, parathas can continue to be a wholesome breakfast choice.
