Fake Brad Pitt scams woman of millions

WEBDESK: A 53-year-old French woman, named Anne, was deceived into a fraudulent online romance with someone impersonating Hollywood actor Brad Pitt. This scam led her to lose nearly €1 million (approximately Rs23 crore), as reported by international media.

The scam began in February 2023, when Anne received a message from a social media account claiming to be Brad Pitt’s mother. Soon after, another account reached out, claiming to be the actor himself. The fraudster convinced Anne she was communicating with the real Brad Pitt using AI-generated images and videos.

As their ‘relationship’ developed, the scammer proposed to her for marriage and shared fabricated stories of financial distress. He said that he needed money to release luxury gifts stuck at customs and later for cancer treatment, saying his accounts were frozen due to a legal battle with Angelina Jolie. Anne trusted his words and transferred substantial amounts to fulfill these requests.

Anne came to know that this was a scam when she saw news reports of Brad Pitt with his new partner, jewelry designer Ines de Ramon, in 2024. Realising she had been duped, she contacted the authorities.

Anne is currently undergoing treatment for severe depression.
