Pakistan is gearing up for its first high-speed rail project, with a proposal for a Lahore-Rawalpindi line submitted to the Punjab chief minister for approval.
The $1.6 billion project, proposed by the transport and mass transit departments, promises to cut travel time between the two cities to under two hours by allowing trains to reach speeds of 250km/h.

The proposal recommends a detailed action plan based on a pre-feasibility study to be funded by the Department of Planning and Development. However, securing upfront funding for this ambitious project remains a significant hurdle.
