Younis Khan recommends new captain for Pakistan team

Following Pakistan’s disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2024, former captain Younis Khan has proposed a new candidate to replace Babar Azam as captain.

Pakistan was eliminated in the group stage for the first time after a crucial Group A match between co-hosts USA and Ireland was abandoned due to rain.

Younis Khan has raised questions about continuing with Babar Azam as the T20I captain. Speaking on national television, he suggested Fakhar Zaman as a potential new captain, praising his performance in turning around Pakistan’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign.

“Why can’t Fakhar Zaman be the captain of the side? Isn’t he a performer? Didn’t he do well in the last 50-over World Cup? Who is that one player who gave us hope? Zaman started the 2023 World Cup in India poorly, but in the second half turned his form around which coincided with Pakistan’s success,” Younis said.

He further highlighted Fakhar’s willingness to adapt for the team’s benefit, noting, “Who is that one player in the side who is leaving his opening slot and batting down at four or five or six? Who is sacrificing his place? Fakhar Zaman! Why won’t you make him the captain?”

Despite Fakhar’s lack of captaincy experience in his seven-year international career, Younis believes his selfless approach and previous performances make him a strong candidate.

Fakhar, however, had a poor T20 World Cup 2024, scoring only 33 runs in four games at an average of 8.25 and a strike rate of 110.
