WEB DESK: The ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was reportedly subjected to an alleged poisoning attempt that occurred in Moscow, where he had been under protection by Russian President Vladimir Putin since fleeing Syria on December 8, 2024. Assad fell gravely ill on Sunday, which raised wide speculation and alarm.
Assad allegedly choked and coughed violently, among other severe symptoms, according to General SVR, a former Russian intelligence officer’s social media account. All of these instances occurred just after he phoned for medical help after complaining of respiratory difficulties.
According to the story, initial tests conducted on Assad indicated that he had evidence of exposure to a toxic chemical. “There is every reason to believe an assassination attempt was made on former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad,” the message continued.
Despite the unexpected ailment, Assad supposedly got treatment in his loft in Moscow, and by Monday, his condition was supposed to be settled. However, neither Syrian or Russian authorities have affirmed or remarked on the episode.
Strains in Exile Bashar al-Assad’s issue follows his sensational removal from power in December 2024. An alliance of revolutionary powers, including the Islamist bunch Hayat Tahrir al-Hoax (HTS), overran Damascus, compelling the Assad family to escape to Russia.
