The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the disease commonly known as monkeypox, is not a new form of COVID-19 and that we already know a lot about this virus and how to manage it.

According to AFP, Hans Kluge, WHO’s Director for Europe, mentioned that while further research on Clade 1b of the virus is needed, the spread of mpox can be controlled.

He highlighted that mpox is not a new COVID-19; we know how to control it, and actions are needed to completely end its transmission in Europe.

In a media briefing via video link from Geneva, Kluge noted that two years ago, they managed to control mpox in Europe by directly engaging with the most affected individuals.

He added that they maintained excellent surveillance, investigated contacts of new cases, and provided useful public health advice.

Kluge stated that changes in behavior, public health measures, and mpox vaccination played a crucial role in controlling the outbreak.

In addition, the WHO official clarified that the general population is not at high risk.

When asked if the WHO is considering a lockdown in Europe or if mpox is another COVID-19, Kluge responded negatively, stating that the primary mode of mpox transmission is physical contact.

He noted that while severe infections may transmit the virus through close contact at home or in hospitals, the exact reasons for the virus’s transmission remain somewhat unclear and require further research.

WHO spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic indicated that the WHO is not recommending the use of masks or mass vaccination for this disease but advises vaccination for those at highest risk.

On August 14, the WHO declared an international health emergency due to the increase in Clade 1b cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo and its spread to neighboring countries.

Previously, in July 2022, the WHO had declared an emergency due to the international spread risk of mpox Clade 2b but ended the emergency in May 2023.
