Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, accompanied by a delegation, arrived at the residence of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman for a meeting.

The meeting is part of ongoing discussions over proposed constitutional amendments.

According to the reports, Bilawal was warmly received by Fazlur Rehman.

Earlier in the day, Bilawal had a significant meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s House, where the two leaders discussed the political situation and the PPP chairman briefed the premier on his discussions with Maulana Fazlur Rehman regarding the constitutional amendments.

Pakistan Peoples Party leader Syed Naveed Qamar claimed on Monday that the JUI-F “agreed on the formation of a constitutional court”.

Elaborating on the constitutional package, the PPP leader said that there is an amendment related to the constitutional court. He added that Maulana Fazl has shown his agreement with the formation of the constitutional court, however, he has some differences over the modus operandi of the constitutional.

“It was agreed that both parties would work together to sort out all the clauses that anyone has objections to and finally bring it out through a consensus draft according to the parliamentary procedure,” Qamar added.

Backstory:

The government and opposition in parliament are in a heated debate over a proposed constitutional amendment bill.

This bill includes changes that would allegedly extend the tenure of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Qazi Faez Isa, who is set to retire in October, and raise the retirement age for judges.

To pass this constitutional amendment, the government needs a two-thirds majority in both houses of parliament. But the government don’t have the support of Fazlur Rehman yet.

As a result, the government has decided to postpone presenting the constitutional amendment indefinitely.
