A woman in India has filed for divorce from her husband, citing his poor personal hygiene as the reason. The woman, who married a man named Rajesh in Agra just a month ago, sought to end the marriage after discovering his infrequent bathing habits, which she described as “unacceptable.”
According to local media reports, the newlywed bride complained that Rajesh bathes only once or twice a month, resulting in offensive body odour. Despite religiously sprinkling Gangajal (water from the sacred Ganges river) on himself once a week, Rajesh’s lack of regular hygiene became a point of contention in the marriage. The woman stated that he had bathed just six times in 40 days, and only at her insistence.
Dowry complaint filed by wife’s family
After expressing her grievances, the woman approached a local family counselling centre, where she requested a divorce. The case took a new turn when her parents filed a dowry harassment complaint against Rajesh, prompting police intervention.
Authorities advised the couple to undergo counselling in an effort to salvage the marriage. Rajesh reportedly agreed to improve his hygiene and bathe daily, which led the woman to reconsider her decision and reconcile with her husband.

This case is the latest in a series of unusual marital disputes in India. In another incident in Jhansi, a woman named Jyoti fled her home after six years of marriage because she disliked her husband’s skin tone. Her husband, Durgapal, reported her disappearance on September 2, also claiming that cash and valuables were missing from their home.
Bride accuses in-laws of dowry demands
Jyoti was later found in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, with two unidentified men. During questioning, she told authorities she was unhappy with her husband’s complexion and accused her in-laws of demanding dowry. She insisted on ending the marriage, while Durgapal accused her of stealing money and jewellery, alleging she had demanded INR 1 million as dowry and threatened to report his family to the police if her demands were not met.
