UN passes resolution granting Palestine new rights

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed a resolution on Friday granting Palestine new rights and privileges and urging the Security Council to reconsider its request for full United Nations membership.

The assembly adopted a resolution with 143 votes in favor and nine against, including the United States and Israel.

The resolution ‘determines that the State of Palestine … should therefore be admitted to membership’ and ‘recommends that the Security Council reconsider the matter favorably.’

Before the voting by the General Assembly, Israel’s ambassador to the UN used a paper shredder to shred the UN charter on stage at the UN General Assembly.

Meanwhile, the situation in Gaza remains dire, with the United Nations warning of potential aid shortages as Israeli forces escalate their ground offensive into the city of Rafah.
