REUTERS: OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed AI pioneer, has finalised its latest reasoning AI model, o3 mini, and is set to launch it within weeks, CEO Sam Altman announced on Friday.
The rollout will include the application programming interface (API) and ChatGPT simultaneously, based on user feedback, Altman shared in a post on social media platform X.
Last December, OpenAI began testing its reasoning AI models, o3 and o3 mini, in a strategic move to compete with industry leaders like Alphabet’s Google. These models aim to tackle complex challenges and advance the capabilities of artificial intelligence.
Originally, the company had scheduled the release of o3 mini for the end of January 2025, with the full o3 model to follow. OpenAI anticipates that these robust large language models will outclass existing technologies, attracting new investments and a broader user base.
This development follows OpenAI’s release of the o1 AI models in September 2024, which were designed to enhance problem-solving by dedicating more time to processing complex queries. According to OpenAI, the o1 models excel in areas such as science, coding, and mathematics, offering unprecedented reasoning capabilities.
The upcoming o3 and o3 mini models promise to surpass the o1 series in power and functionality, according to previous company statements.
In addition to this, OpenAI recently introduced Tasks, a beta feature for ChatGPT that marks the company’s entry into the virtual assistant space, competing with Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa.
OpenAI’s innovations continue to fuel its momentum. The 2022 launch of ChatGPT ignited a surge of interest in AI, leading to a $6.6 billion funding round in October 2024. As OpenAI advances its technology, the company solidifies its position at the forefront of artificial intelligence innovation.
