WEB DESK: The Cabinet Division has released a critical cybersecurity advisory to promote the safe and secure usage of Wi-Fi networks in households and organisations.
Highlighting the increasing dependency on Wi-Fi as an integral component of modern ICT infrastructure, the advisory underscores the pivotal role of Wi-Fi router security in mitigating cybersecurity threats.
There are weak security capabilities that leave Wi-Fi routers as devices that would be seen in any network as the most unsecured. This arises from the fact that routers have been designed to work but cannot be protected in terms of security. Such scenarios make the router an easy target to the threat actors because of a lack of robust security features and the fact that users are unaware of the factors- default configuration and unpatched vulnerabilities.
Advisories warn that attackers may use such vulnerabilities to gain permanent access to the networks, install malware, and compromise critical information through theft.
Vulnerabilities are critical: Research shows that one-third of all known critical vulnerabilities in Wi-Fi routers are unpatched or unaddressed by manufacturers.
Lack of Expertise: There is no way by which most users and organisations tend to lack the necessary technical skills to secure or harden Wi-Fi routers, which may ultimately make their cyberspace even weaker.
Common Threats: Apart from listing the common issues and highlighting the most common Wi-Fi security issues, the advisory also proposes actionable solutions to alleviate risk.
