SHC nullifies KU’s cancellation of IHC Judge Jahangiri’s degree

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has suspended Karachi University’s (KU) decision to revoke the law degree of Islamabad High Court (IHC) Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, ruling in his favor.

The court found that KU’s Syndicate and Unfair Means Committee acted unlawfully, canceling the degree without giving Justice Jahangiri an opportunity to defend himself, which violated his right to a fair trial under Article 10-A of the Constitution.

The controversy surfaced when a letter, allegedly from KU’s controller of examinations, circulated on social media questioning the legitimacy of Jahangiri’s law degree.

Moreover, KU subsequently cancelled his 1991 LLB degree, sparking legal action. Jahangiri’s petition argued that he was unfairly targeted and the decision was made in his absence, violating due process.

Furthermore, the SHC termed KU’s actions “illegal” and ordered the university to refrain from enforcing the decision, scheduling the next hearing within three weeks.
