PTA blocks 469 apps for violating Islamic and moral standards
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has recently blocked 469 mobile applications following complaints from stakeholders and the public.
This action includes 435 Android apps and 34 Apple apps, flagged for content deemed contrary to Islamic values, indecent material, or fraudulent activities.
Moreover, under Section 37 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, the PTA is empowered to remove or block online content that threatens national security, public order, or morality.

Section 37(1) of PECA mandates the PTA to block or remove online content deemed harmful to national security and public morality. This provision has guided the PTA’s efforts in maintaining digital content standards in Pakistan.
Furthermore, regulatory guidance is provided under Section 37(2) of PECA, which details procedures for content removal. The federal government’s 2021 rules on content removal and blocking ensure that the PTA’s actions are transparent and subject to oversight, reinforcing a structured approach to managing online content.
