ISLAMABAD: PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram on Wednesday condemned Information Minister Attaullah Tarar for endorsing military court trials of civilians, stating such actions have “tarnished Pakistan’s democratic and constitutional image globally.”

The criticism followed the military’s announcement on December 21 that 25 PTI activists were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of two to 10 years by military courts for their involvement in the May 9, 2023, riots. The trials have drawn sharp international criticism, with the United Kingdom terming them as “lacking transparency” and the European Union expressing concerns about their inconsistency with Pakistan’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

During a press conference, Tarar defended the trials, asserting that civilians attacking military installations would be prosecuted by the military under laws established by parliament. He claimed the process adhered to Supreme Court orders guaranteeing fair trials, legal counsel, family access, and appeal rights.

In a statement posted on PTI’s official X account, Akram dismissed Tarar’s remarks as “a collection of lies and superstitions,” accusing the government of betraying democratic principles. “Advocating for military courts is the only means of survival for this government,” Akram said, alleging that the current administration has compromised democracy, the constitution, and the fundamental rights of Pakistanis for political survival.

He further called for an investigation into the May 9 riots and alleged electoral fraud in February’s general elections.

Later, Akram released a video statement welcoming international scrutiny, specifically from the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union. He urged Pakistan to view this criticism not as foreign interference but as support for human rights and democracy.

“The PTI as a party is grateful for those speaking up for human rights and the rule of law,” Akram said, referencing US envoy Richard Grennell and others advocating for Imran Khan’s release. He highlighted that addressing these concerns is essential for Pakistan’s credibility on the global stage.
