ISLAMABAD: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has said that his party workers and supporters involved in the May 9 riots should be held accountable as the law.

Speaking on ARY News’ programme, Gandapur said that he does not disown those among his supporters who participated in the May 9 riots.

“Those who made mistakes should be punished according to the law,” Gandapur said. He added that anyone who acted emotionally and crossed the line should face consequences, but within the bounds of the law.

Hundreds of thousands of PTI supporters and workers took to the streets on May 9, 2023, attacking government and military installations, including Pakistan’s Army headquarters, to protest the arrest of Imran Khan in a £190 million corruption case.

On May 9, PTI workers and supporters targeted military facilities across the country following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Military courts in Pakistan have so far sentenced 85 individuals for their roles in violent attacks on military installations during the May 9 riots including Imran Khan’s nephew, Hassan Niazi.

Their sentences range from two years to ten years.

Earlier, on January 2, Army Chief General Asim Munir accepted the mercy petitions of 19 convicts involved in the May 9, 2023. According to the ISPR, a total of 67 convicts have given their mercy petitions after they were sentenced in the May 9 riots.

 “48 petitions have been processed to Courts of Appeal, while petitions of 19 convicts have been accepted purely on humanitarian grounds, in accordance with the law,” the military’s media wing.

The statement further stated that mercy petitions of the remaining convicts will be decided in due course of time, following the legal process.
