ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday welcomed the World Bank’s historic $20 billion commitment to Pakistan under the 10-year Country Partnership Framework (CPF).

The premier took to X, formally known as Twitter, to laud the World Bank 10-year programme, “Pakistan Country Partnership Framework 2025-35” for Pakistan.

“I deeply appreciate the efforts of General Asim Munir and my colleagues who have worked day and night to strengthen Pakistan’s foundation for such transformative partnerships,” Shehbaz Sharif said in his post.

 He further said in his post that CPF reflects the World Bank’s confidence in Pakistan’s economic resilience and potential.

“We look forward to strengthening our partnership as we align our efforts for creating lasting opportunities for our people,” he said.

 

Earlier today, the World Bank announced a $20 billion commitment to Pakistan under a 10-year Country Partnership Framework.

The programme, “Pakistan Country Partnership Framework 2025-35”, aims to improve social indicators in six targeted areas.

Under the programme, the World Bank will provide about three-quarters of this $20 billion through the International Development Association (IDA). The World Bank will provide the remaining amount for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). 

The report said that the expanded framework will focus on six key development sectors. The CPF will be complemented by additional funding from the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

The CPF aims to reduce child stunting, combat climate change, improve learning outcomes, provide clean water, and leverage public resources and private investment for inclusive development.

Specific targets include increasing tax revenue to more than 15 per cent of GDP, adding 10 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity, providing quality education to 12 million students and health care to 50 million people, including providing clean water and sanitation to 60 million people in the CPF.

There are targets such as strengthening food security for 30 million people and increasing access to contraception for 30 million women, targets set to address floods and other disasters and hazards, benefiting 75 million people.

“The CPF will be informed by the ‘Reforms for a Brighter Future (RBF): Time to Decide’ program, which consists of ten policy notes on the country’s key development priorities, as well as the Human Capital Review, the Country Economic Memorandum, the Pakistan Country Climate Development Report, Systematic Country Diagnostic (SCD) and the Country Private Sector Diagnostic (CPSD), read the World Bank statement.
