WEB DESK: The PEMRA notification banning the reporting of judicial proceedings has been challenged in the Islamabad High Court.

The petitioners in this case are the Press Association of the Supreme Court and the Islamabad High Court Journalists Association.

The petition was filed by Barrister Umar Ijaz Gilani and the President of the Islamabad High Court Bar, Rai Qaisar Abbas, who stated that the petitioners are representative bodies of Supreme Court and High Court reporters.

In the petition against the PEMRA notification, the Secretary of Information and the Chairman of PEMRA have been made parties.

The petition asserts that on May 21, PEMRA issued amended guidelines regarding judicial reporting, which violate Articles 19 and 19A of the Constitution.

PEMRA’s action to ban court reporting has also been challenged in the Lahore High Court.

The petition further argues that PEMRA’s notification misinterpreted a Supreme Court ruling.

The petition requests that the PEMRA notification be declared unconstitutional and void, and it should be suspended until a final decision is made on the petition.
