The journey began six years ago with the introduction of blackberry plants from California to Pakistan. The Barani Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) in Chakwal played a pivotal role in conducting research and successfully growing the fruit.

Following the successful experiment, BARI has initiated efforts to educate and support farmers in adopting blackberry cultivation practices.

Agronomists highlight the economic potential of blackberry farming, noting that each plant can yield approximately four to five kilograms of fruit annually.

Additionally, blackberries are in high demand and are expected to fetch favorable prices in the market. Furthermore, they are touted for their purported health benefits, including cancer prevention.

This accomplishment adds to Pakistan’s recent achievements in diversifying its fruit cultivation portfolio. Notably, the cultivation of exotic mango varieties, such as the red and purple Japanese mangoes and the prestigious ‘Miyazaki’ mangoes from Japan, has gained traction in the country.

These mango varieties, renowned for their exceptional taste and distinct colors, have garnered significant attention and value in local markets.
