Pakistan restricts WhatsApp ahead of PTI protest

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s government has imposed restrictions on WhatsApp services ahead of a planned protest by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which is calling for the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, workers arested in May 9 riots.

Global internet observatory NetBlocks confirmed the disruption, noting that WhatsApp’s backends were restricted across the country.

“Live metrics show WhatsApp backends have been restricted in Pakistan, corroborating reports of media-sharing issues,” NetBlocks posted on its official X account. The restriction was linked to heightened security measures ahead of PTI’s demonstration.

The graphic shared by NetBlocks indicated that WhatsApp was inaccessible on most internet service providers, with reachability dropping to 0%. However, it also noted that the service remained partially available, with 50% of servers connected to Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) still operational.

The disruptions come as PTI prepares for a large protest in Islamabad, demanding the release of Khan, who is currently imprisoned. Authorities have also indicated that Wi-Fi and mobile data services may be suspended in certain areas deemed to have security concerns.

An interior ministry spokesperson clarified that while restrictions would be imposed in specific regions, mobile and internet services would continue to function normally in other parts of the country.
