Muhammad Zubair Khan, the son of Anwar Khan, has made an emotional appeal to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir, seeking forgiveness for his father, who has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in connection with the events of May 9.

A military court has ruled that Anwar and more than 20 other Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activists will face harsh prison sentences.

Due to their involvement in the May 9 riots, they face sentences ranging from two to ten years.

In a a TikTok video, Zubair sitting alongside his younger brother disclosed that with his father incarcerated, his family is struggling to make ends meet.

He mentioned that he has five sisters as well and over the span of a year and a half, the family has seen their father just once.

He also urged the government to provide them with financial support.

Zubair mentioned that individuals, including Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan, provided the family Rs20,000, however, the family remains uncertain about what the future holds.

Sentences in May 9 case

On Saturday, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) made the announcement that 25 PTI activities were awarded sentences.

The military said the events of May 9, 2023 were “politically provoked violence and arson at multiple places, marking a dark chapter in the history of Pakistan”.

“Building on a sustained narrative of hate and lies, politically orchestrated attacks were carried out on the installations of the armed forces including desecration of the monuments of shuhada,” the military said.

All convicts retain the right to appeal and other legal recourses, as guaranteed by the law and the Constitution, according to ISPR.
