Karachi temperature drops to 9°C: PMD

KARACHI: According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) Karachi is currently experiencing a cold wave, with temperatures dropping to 9°C overnight.

The temperature is expected to fall to 6-9°C in the next 24 hours. Winds from the northeast are blowing at a speed of 5 km/h, with the humidity level at 63%.

The PMD predicts that the cold and dry conditions will persist throughout the week, with temperatures possibly reaching as low as 6°C.

These chilly conditions are linked to a cold spell originating from Quetta, where temperatures have plunged to -7°C.

Earlier this week, Karachi experienced its first rain of the winter season on January 4, resulting in a drop in temperature, which is expected to last for a week. Light rain was reported in several different areas, including Gulshan-e-Maymar, Baldia Town, Orangi Town, North Nazimabad, and surrounding areas. Central Karachi also saw drizzle in key locations like Guru Mandir, M.A. Jinnah Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and Shahrah-e-Faisal. The northern outskirts, including Hub Chowki, were not left out, and the weather conditions were similar.

The PMD noted that the wet spell has intensified the already cold weather.

Meanwhile, other parts of Balochistan also face extreme cold, with Kalat recording -10°C and Ziarat -9°C.

On the other hand, Karachi ranks as the 11th most polluted city in the world. Karachi is facing high levels of air pollution, with particulate matter (PM) levels recorded at 170, This combination of frigid temperatures and poor air quality is making life difficult for residents, especially those who rely on outdoor activities.
